CHOOSING HEALTHY AND ACTIVE LIFESTYLES FOR KIDS™ (CHALK)

Who We Are
Choosing Healthy & Active Lifestyles for Kids™ (CHALK) is a collaboration between NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Ambulatory Care Network, Columbia University Medical Center's Community Pediatrics program, and the community of Northern Manhattan. It began as a five year Center for Best Practices grant funded by the New York State Department of Health in 2008, and became a hospital program in 2012. The goal of CHALK is to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity in Northern Manhattan and to create an environment in which healthy lifestyles are integral to the lives of all children and their families. Our three areas of focus are schools, the community and our medical center.

Our Priorities
• To disseminate CHALK’s 10 Habits of Healthy Kids to help families develop skills to live a healthy lifestyle
• Empower schools to focus on nutrition and physical activity by promoting student, staff, and parent wellness
• Support health-promoting programs to fill the gap where resources are lacking in the neighborhood
• Utilize the passion and expertise of the community to help spread our message
• Connect and mobilize community members, local businesses, and community organizations to further spread our message
