June is Men’s Health Month
As many of us are long past our New Year’s resolutions many of which were promises to eat healthy and be more active, a friendly reminder that it is still possible to achieve those resolutions. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has some great resources about men’s health as a part of the Eat Right campaign.
The Eat Right campaign raises a great point about realizing the ‘How, when, why and where we eat are just as important as what we eat. To develop mindful eating patterns that includes nutritious and flavorful foods — that's the best way to savor the flavor of eating right!’
It’s important to remember to cut down on the sugars and fats with each meal, but it is also important to increase intake fiber and eat more fresh vegetables, and fruits. Beans are also fantastic addition to any meal not only because they are super versatile, but they are packed full of fiber, minerals, protein, and are a money saver!
It is essential to remember not every community can access fresh nutritious food or have the opportunity of sharing social experiences and food traditions. Citymeals on Wheels provides over 2 million meals to 18,000 homebound elderly New Yorkers every year. In addition to nutritionally balanced meals, our devoted staff and volunteers also deliver vital human companionship. Citymeals on Wheels works in a public-private partnership with NYC’s Department for the Aging (DFTA) and supplements funding for weekend, holiday, and emergency meals for homebound elderly New Yorkers aged 60 and over. A great way to celebrate eating right and being more active not only in the physical sense but also by engaging your community, would be to volunteer with us.
