What is the flu Vaccine?

The flu vaccine protects against the flu virus. It is most often given as a shot, but there is also a nasal mist option for certain people between the ages of 2 and 49.

Who should get the flu vaccine?

The Centers for Disease Control states that any person over 6 months of age should get the flu vaccine. Check with your healthcare provider, because there are some people who should not get the vaccine.

Who should NOT get the flu vaccine?

Babies younger than 6 months should not get the flu vaccine. Talk to your doctor about whether you can get it if you:
-Have severe allergies
-Have ever had Guillain-Barré Syndrome
-Are not feeling well

Can I catch the flu from the flu vaccine?

No. Some people do feel short-term soreness at the site where the shot was given. A few have other short-term side effects, like a low fever or headache, but this is not due to the flu virus.

I got a flu vaccine last year. Why do I need to get it again?

The flu virus changes over time, and the vaccine for this year may not be the same as the one you had last year. Also, the effect of the vaccine declines over time, so you should get a new one each year.
